WORCESTER and District president Colin Pettifer won the association’s winter league series fourth round on the canal between the Cavalier and Park Street.

Drawn below George Street bridge, Pettifer stuck to a simple approach to beat the windy conditions.

He presented his worm and caster bait at just eight metres into the centre channel for a run of perch, roach, rudd and skimmers.

With a 3lb bream caught late on, Pettifer caught a winning 6lb 11oz 6dr.

Phoenix’s Martin Hunt was second with 5-2 through perch on caster and dace and small fish on pinkie baits.

The Cavalier section victor was Nigel Field (4-10-7) and best on the Arboretum was Matt Hodgetts (4-3).

Top team were Barnards Green’s Paul Harris, Gary Rowberry, Hodgetts and Paul Wilson with 14 points, ahead of Presidents and Alans Tackle in second with 16.

With two rounds to go, Phoenix lead with 60 followed by Barnards Green on 61.

Meanwhile, gale-force winds made fishing conditions tricky for a good turnout of Malvern anglers in their first winter contest at Fishponds Colwell.

Most anglers struggled to catch even a few small fish, although eventual winner Richard Webster managed to accumulate 4-2-0 of small perch and roach on pole fished pinkies.

In contrast, Steve Warren found just two nice sized ide to weigh in 2-12-0, while third-placed John Taylor had one ide in the last minute of the match to add to a number of small perch for 2-4-0.
