PERRY Humphreys insists Worcester Warriors' young Sevens side have plenty to be proud of after their showing in the Singha Premiership Sevens at Kingston Park in Newcastle.

Mark Hewitt's Warriors side played out a 19-19 draw with Sale Sharks before beating Leicester Tigers 27-5.

But needing to better Sale's points difference, Warriors fell to competition winners Newcastle Falcons 40-12 in their final Group ‘D’ match.

Warriors may have narrowly missed out on a place at the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s final this Friday but Humphreys admitted the side could take a lot from their experience.

He said: "We had a number of young guys in the team, some who were just 17 and 18 years old, and they really stepped up.

"Coming onto a big stage and playing in front of lots of people can be really fazing but all credit to them as they didn't look out of place and performed well.

"So there's plenty to take despite us narrowly missing out on the Finals."

Warriors had back-to-back games with Sale and Leicester to start their tournament and Humphreys admitted it was tough going - although the side played some of their best rugby of the day against the Tigers.

He explained: "We were unlucky not to beat Sale and should have won that match .

"It was very difficult going into the second game against Leicester with no rest but we put them under a lot of pressure and got the result."

Newcastle proved too strong for Warriors in the end but Humphreys insists the youngsters will benefit from their Sevens test.

He added: "Newcastle were a really strong side and managed to expose us in some one-on-one situations.

"We were always chasing the game and needed to stay in the contest but they got away from us and we're disappointed we couldn't get something out of it to book a place at the Finals.

"But we played some attractive rugby and learned a great deal.

"Now we've blown some cobwebs out by getting some match action, we're hungry to play more competitive rugby."
