BARBARA Gibson is celebrating after winning the Malvern Hills district female sports personality of the year award at the age of 71.

The regular Malvern Hills Badminton Club player picked up her accolade at Malvern College after enjoying success in England and abroad.

Gibson, of Upton, has won the Cumbria Classic, Kent Gold, English National and All England Championships in singles and doubles this year.

While in Florida in the winter, she also claimed three gold medals competing in the Miami Senior International Championships.

Due to the success, the Worcestershire over 65s team member has been selected for the England side to play in the World Masters Championships in Sweden in September.

Gibson admitted after her award: “To win this at my age is the icing on the cake.

“I’m thrilled. I’d like to thank my friends, who nominated me, and the council for hosting the evening, which was a wonderful celebration of local sport, and presenting me with the award.”

As a qualified Badminton England coach, she also endeavours to give back to the sport she loves by coaching anyone who asks in her free time.

Gibson said: “I’m keen to encourage more women to play badminton. It’s a fun way to exercise the whole body.

“I’ve been coaching on a Saturday morning for two years at Dyson Perrins and have been in a regular group of ladies but we would like more.

“I’ve also volunteered to attend the new drop-in and play sessions on Mondays from 4pm until 6pm, also at Dyson Perrins, to give advice if needed.”

The Dyson Perrins-based Malvern Hills club are looking for new members to play in their teams next season.
