FOUR of this year’s most consistent golfers at The Worcestershire met in the Ledbury Cup foursomes knockout final.

Match-play tournaments are always keenly contested and the climax of this one was no exception.

Mark Read and Phil Birch beat longstanding members Terry Smith and Gary Lynes in one semi-final.

They took on Gary Godwin and Chris Rawlings, who defeated Paul Jones and Neville Clarke in the last four.

The final produced fine golf and, despite conceding a handful of strokes, Read and Birch secured the silverware with a fine 3&2 win.

In the ladies’ competition, the Silver Division’s Pat Rose headed a 22-strong field when they played their November medal competition.

Wet and windy playing conditions tested the resolve of all players and Rose did well to record a nett score of 76.

She finished three strokes ahead of Pauline Belsham, with Cathy Harris third.

Jan Kirkland took the Bronze Division ahead of Jane Poynder and Ann Garner, while Maureen Riley once more secured the Copper Division.

From a smaller entry, Alison Tuck won the weekend medal with 75 nett.

The nine-hole stableford competition was won by Betty Mitchell on count-back from Pauline Taylor.

The first of the winter mixed competitions swung into action with a Bowmaker stableford.

Teams of four used the better ladies’ and men’s score at each hole to count towards their total.

This week’s winning team of Gordon and June Jones with Charles and Isabel Carmichael scored 84 points.

They just edged out Nigel and Corinne Mills with Andy Greene and April Wilding on count-back.

Similarly, Jim and Di Wilde with Andy and Alex Dunster took third place, with 79 points on count-back from Mike and Yvonne Cawley with Andrew and Sally Dare.
