MARK Read won The Worcestershire’s prestigious Parker Cup on the 37th hole.

The Long-standing member and 2014 club champion Jason Allies played exceptional golf in an exciting two-round final in Malvern Wells.

Open to players recording the top 16 gross scores in the club championship, the match-play competition is renowned for a high standard.

In the morning round, Read made a strong start, going three-up after three.

Allies levelled the scores and then took the initiative, going one-up after nine and three-up after 12.

Read dug in to reduce the deficit to one after 17 but a powerful gust of wind carried his ball out of bounds on the 18th, leaving Allies two-up going into the afternoon round.

Continuing his earlier momentum, Allies quickly increased his lead to four before a tenacious Read clawed his way back to level again after 27 holes.

He then chipped in on the 14th to record an unlikely par from a difficult position to go one-up.

Read increased the lead to two-up but a birdie by Allies on the 17th and a win on the 18th took the match to a sudden-death play-off.

After two good drives on the first extra hole, Allies missed his putt for par and Read sank a 15-foot putt for a birdie and the victory.

Meanwhile, Steve Hill (handicap 18) and Peter Hill (12) lifted the Spreckley Foursomes trophies with a score of 35 points on a back-six count-back from Alan Boyd (13) and Bruce Duncan (9).

Third were Mark Read (4) and Phil Birch (6) with 34, beating Andy Fleming (12) and Mike Bolton (20) on the back nine.

This season’s ladies’ competition victors battled it out for the Winners’ Cup.

With the course playing longer due to heavy overnight rain, Liz Evans did well to record a nett 73 to lift the silverware.

Brenda Jones secured second place with 74 on count-back from Cathy Harris.

A smaller entry for the stableford competition saw a win for Pauline Belsham.

Similarly testing conditions resulted in moderate scoring for all but the winner in the men’s mid-week stableford.

Improving golfer Charles Carmichael (handicap 19) led the field by some margin with 39 points.

Following him home in Division Two were Terry Cox (20 handicap-33 points), Phil Bayliss (17-30) and Graham Holmes (28-30).

Division One was claimed by Peter Jolly (16-32) ahead of Richard Sebol (6-31) and club captain Roger Brierly (8-30).

The Worcestershire’s men beat Evesham 6-0 to give themselves a chance of retaining the ‘A’ team league title, which they have held for the past two years.

In extremely windy conditions, the high point was a 4&3 win for the new partnership of Kevin Carter (handicap 6) and Tom Howells (2).

There were wins for Dave Marshall (1) and Steve Carter (11) 3&1, Andy McCabe (5) and Phil Birch (6) 2&1 and Andy Dunster (6) and Lee Whittall (6) two-up.

Steve Lane (+2) and in-form Richard Sebok (7) won 3&2, while the comeback of the day was Gerald Bird (6) and Paul Wakely (10), who, after being four down after eight holes, won 2&1.

Bird burned up the back nine to secure the clean sweep of all six matches.

The result means the team needs to win their final fixture at Sapey to retain the league trophy.
