MATT Cox is determined to bring success to Worcester Warriors after returning to his home club.

The 26-year-old back-rower began his career at Sixways but left to join rivals Gloucester in 2010, going on to make 62 appearances.

But Redditch-born Cox agreed a three-year deal to be part of Dean Ryan’s revolution and believes he is much better for experiencing the last four years.

He said: “I was at Worcester from 15 and left at 21. Going away for four years, I played Heineken Cup rugby, was undefeated in two years at Gloucester, won the LV= Cup and the Premiership sevens.

“The experience I got from that was brilliant and now seeing Dean and Hoggy (Carl Hogg, head coach) here, why can’t I do that for my home club?

“That’s why I didn’t take the contract up with Gloucester. Both contracts were on the table, for three years, and there was nothing between them but it was my home club and the chance to bring success under some good people.

“Our plan is to win the Championship, come up with a strong group of lads that have had 12 months together and have developed the ethos we want to play with.”

Although Cox didn’t play under Ryan at Gloucester, he is no stranger to Hogg and is relishing the chance to link up again with the Scot.

He said: “I’ve worked a lot with Hoggy mainly and I’ve had a lot of dealings with Dean through rugby – but Hoggy is someone I rate highly as a forwards coach.”

A lot has happened since Cox was last at Sixways — the entire Richard Hill era and a second relegation to the Championship — but some familiar faces remain.

Backs Chris Pennell, Alex Grove and Jonny Arr all came through the academy with Cox and have established themselves as first-team fixtures.

“There are a handful of boys who are still around like Chris, Alex and Jonny, and seeing them still here is pretty much the only thing that’s stayed the same,” Cox said. “A few of the interns when I was here are now running the show.”

Cox now wants to join that trio, and all the other players at Warriors, in forging a brighter future for the club.
