Malvern cricket struggles continue

MALVERN slumped to the bottom of Worcestershire League Division Two after being bowled out for just 90 in a 113-run defeat at Lye.

Asked to field first, Malvern turned to Jez Lee to open the bowling for the first time this year and he made immediate inroads, removing Imran Riaz (2) in the third over.

Lee bowled 12 overs for just 19 runs and bagged two wickets in his first spell.

After a tight start, supported ably by David Cox and Neil Thompson, Malvern took regular Lye wickets with only Sakib Ali (40) and the tail hitting double figures before they were bowled out in the last over for 203.

Lee was the stand-out bowler with 5-35 from 16.4 overs.

Malvern openers Andy Cullen and Anthony Arnold started solidly against tight bowling. Cullen (11) departed after a hostile Adam Meacham delivery clipped his glove and flew to first slip.

But a familiar Malvern collapse ensued as Lye turned to veteran spinner Mohammed Ishtiaq and Iqbal.

Both had the Malvern batsmen at sixes and sevens with the ball turning square on a dry wicket and Ishtiaq finished with 4-8 from five overs.

Only Cox and Will Moriarty managed to survive for any great length of time, scoring 17 and 19 respectively.

The second half of the season starts tomorrow (1pm) with a visit to Regency Road by fifth-from-bottom Cookley, who narrowly defeated Malvern in the opening game.

Malvern seconds won by 113 runs in Division Two after skittling their visitors for 69.

Ashley Jones scored 51 and then took 4-13 with Andrew Croft claiming 4-15.
