GOLFERS came from a wide range of local clubs to compete for the De Vere Trophies in The Worcestershire’s open better-ball stableford.

Scoring reflected an excellent standard and superb playing conditions with the home club providing the winning pair of Jason Allies and Andy Dunster.

Playing off handicaps of four and six respectively, club champion Allies and Dunster returned 47 stableford points to lift the trophies.

A sound knowledge of the testing greens ensured The Worcestershire also provided other prize-winners, including runners-up Kevin Carter (handicap 6) and Steve Carter (11) on 44.

The third nett prize went to N Simmons (12) and A Workman (5) from the Forest of Dean Golf Club, who returned 42, ahead of home players David Flanagan (13) and Phil Park (10) and Phil Birch (6) and Mark Read (4) on count-back.

The established Malvern Wells club pairing of Alan Watts (6) and Carl Baylis (4) lifted the gross prize with 39 points ahead of Tom Howells (1) and Andy McCabe on 38.

Seventy-eight competitors entered a veterans’ stableford for members over 60 years of age and the competition was split into three divisions due to a big turn-out.

Mick Lloyd (handicap 11) took Division One with 38 points and Mike Holt (handicap 17) Division Two with 39.

The best score was returned by Division Three’s Trevor Simmons (19) with 41.

Other notable efforts were from Al Hilson (17), Graham Hill (19) and Len Coleman (22), all on 38.

The Worcestershire ladies competed in an 18-hole stableford with the Grannies’ Cup awarded to the best nett score from a grandmother.

While Liz Evans won the overall competition from Di Wilde in second spot, third-placed Pat Rose qualified to lift the trophy.

All three were playing in the Silver Division and returned 37 points.

Scoring was also close in the Bronze Division when Jenni Nions beat Tina Jukes and third-placed Janet Manning Cox, all on 32.

Jenny Jones won the Copper Division with 30.

In matches, Lucy Walton, Di Meakin, Sally Dare, Chris Urry and Jackie Marks took The Worcestershire to a 4-1 fine home win over The Vale in their first scratch match of the season.

Vanessa Chesterton captained a successful ladies' team at home in a friendly 3½-½ victory over Worcester Golf and Country Club.

Twenty golfers enjoyed a July 4 American Independence Day fun evening.

Three lady newcomers joined in as everyone dressed in red, white and blue for a nine-hole round of golf with a ribs and burger buffet afterwards.

Di and Jim Wilde and Jenny and Colin Jones took the honours with 44 points in the four-ball alliance.
