Olly the hero with a double century

Malvern Gazette: Olly the hero with a double century Olly the hero with a double century

OLLY Swift went from zero to hero in the space of 24 hours as he recorded the highest total of his young career.

The 21-year-old was caught for a duck in Worcester Nomads’ three-run Worcestershire League Division One defeat at Evesham on Saturday, the second time in a row he had failed to score.

But Swift wasted little time in putting that disappointment behind him to construct a magnificent 206 not out for the Nomads Sunday academy.

He hit three sixes and 20 fours on his way to a remarkable double century as Nomads defeated Bewdley by 82 runs in the Worcestershire Sunday League.

In doing so, Swift more than doubled his previous personal best effort of 102 and earned himself a £25 Fearnley Factory Shop voucher for being named Worcester News player-of-the-week.

“I played on Saturday and got out for zero so I thought I needed time at the crease,” he said. “It was a perfect opportunity. I treated it like a net session and it went well for me.

“I got off to a steady start and the runs just came with it and I was seeing the ball well. I wasn’t expecting to get anywhere near 200 but 50 became 100 and then 150 so it was good.

“We’ve got a good, strong Sunday academy team with a lot of 16-year-olds. I batted with them and it went from there. Nothing was going through my mind in terms of my own score, it was about keeping the scoreboard ticking over.”

“I went through stages with a lot of quick boundaries but sometimes it was just singles. The ball was coming off the bat a lot better than expected, it felt good.”

Swift, who was dropped once after he had reached triple figures, added: “On Saturday our captain (Ben Schiffman) had a word with us and just said we needed to use Sundays as a chance to get our eye in for the season.

“I took that in and there was no better opportunity. It is a big contrast, zero to 200, but it was very enjoyable.”
