THE Worcestershire Golf Club's England junior squad member Lucy Walton regained her county ladies’ championship title from last year’s winner Sarah Nicklin.

The weather on all three days of the tournament was windy with heavy showers.

On the first day, Walton won the gross 36-hole competition for the Kate Brinton Trophy, ensuring her number one seeding for the knockouts.

After not dropping a hole and beating Ciara Kelly in the semi-finals, Walton recorded an emphatic 5&4 victory over the experienced Nicklin with an eight-foot downhill putt.

Back in Malvern Wells, former sports teacher Liz Evans mastered the testing conditions in the ladies' Tuesday medal.

With the course playing long due to overnight rain, Silver Division winner Evans recorded a nett 74, one ahead of Pat Rose (75) with Sue Boardman (76) third.

In the Bronze Division, Jill Mico triumphed ahead of Hazel Cartledge and Lisa Digings.

After winning the Sunday Medal with a nett 70, Walton reduced her playing handicap to two. Jane Poynder and Corinne Mills took the minor placings.

The annual ladies' derby at Worcester Golf and Country Club was based on 12-a-side singles stroke play.

The Worcestershire, led by Rose, lost by just three strokes and captain Faith Tubb presented the prize.

But the ladies recorded a 3-1 friendly win at The Herefordshire with Di Wilde taking her match with Jenny Jones.

Jen Bishop and Sharon Williams also triumphed, while Cartledge with Vivienne Marsden and Janet Long with Lisa Stocker halved.

Jones’ Mail on Sunday team failed to progress to the national fifth round when they lost 3-2 at Ross-on-Wye.

Other team members were Mary Horrobin, Helen Thomas, Ali Tuck and Chris Urry.

In men’s matches, The Worcestershire’s men’s ‘A’ team secured a fine 3-3 draw at Kidderminster.

New partnership Andy Fleming (handicap 12) and Lee Whittall (6) shone against the hosts' top pairing with a fine 3&2 victory.

The other success was secured by Andy McCabe (5) and Tom Howells (3) 2&1.

There were halves involving Peter Lupino (0) and Paul Wakely (9) and Phil Birch (6) and Mark Read (4).

Dave Tucker (9) and Kevin Carter (6) lost 3&2 and Dave Marshall (1) and Steve Carter (11) 3&1.

A new bi-annual fixture saw The Worcestershire go down 4-2 at Bransford.

Tucker (9) and Ralph Kelsall (9) won 2&1 and McCabe (5) and Birch (6) 4&3. There will be a return fixture in September.

Simon Phillips’ 38 points secured the midweek stableford at The Worcestershire.

Playing off a handicap of 13, Phillips took Division One from Nick Smith (5-36) and Mick Lloyd (11-35).

John Connell (handicap 24) carded 36 to win Division Two ahead of David Anderson (21-35) and Ian Smith (17-34).

On-song Andrew Dare and Sally Dare claimed the mixed closed meeting with 38 stableford points, one ahead of Trevor and Brenda Cox.

Will Brimmell with Joyce Duncan and Jim Wilde and Di Wilde also scored 37.

In a mixed 'B' team match at home to Ludlow, Jan Kirkland led The Worcestershire to a 4-4 draw.

Successful players were Kirkland and Andy Turner, Jane Tromans and John Flanagan, Liz Pool and Peter Hill and Ann Garner and Malcolm Garner.
