NEWENT are one game away from a return to Twickenham after booking a place in the RFU Senior Vase semi-finals.

They romped to a 57-6 win at Gosford All Blacks in the last eight and now head to Harrow on Saturday, April 19, for the right to play at the home of English rugby again.

Newent won the RFU Junior Vase last season at Twickenham by beating Baildon 58-29.

In the latest match, Gosford were a big, well-organised side and effective at the breakdown, but they could not match the visitors' pace and intensity, expertise at the set-piece or clinical finishing.

Newent suffered with their discipline, though, especially at the rucks, which cost them yellow cards.

With three back-row forwards unavailable through injury or illness, Barney Goatley played at openside yet scored a hat-trick of fine individual tries.

Older brother Joe Goatley was absent due to injury, so centre Ross Webb took on the kicking duties with an 80 per cent success rate.

Webb also added two tries to give him a personal tally of 27 points.

He opened the scoring with a tricky penalty on seven minutes before Newent's scrum dominance led to a converted try for Barney Goatley after number eight John Duffin's drive.

Brett Gardner's break from the restart saw quick ruck ball spun along the line to Dan Bubb-Sacklyn and the winger provided a classy finish with Webb converting.

Gosford kicked a penalty in response but a third converted try arrived through Barney Goatley after good work from full-back Richard Merrett and Gardner.

Newent centre Charlie Gellert was awarded a yellow card and Gosford added another penalty but Webb's converted effort made it 24-3 at half-time.

Chris Steward was also sin-binned but returned to set up fellow prop Morgan Morris for another try.

Newent added three more quick converted tries through Jamie Meek, Webb and Barney Goatley. Webb kicked seven conversions in total.

The Gloucester Premier Division leaders, who are top on points difference, return to league action on Saturday at third-placed Whitehall.
