WEST Malvern beat Malvern by one wicket on the last ball in Worcestershire Cricket Board Indoor League Worcester Division Two.

Each innings started well, with Malvern accruing 55 for the first wicket and West scoring 20 per cent of the total required in the first over.

But both slid away so, after six overs, they were level pegging in the 40s before Malvern finished on 95-4 and West 96-5 in reply.

The town managed 15 from the last over with Ash Jones (33 not out) and Steve Lake (17no) finally sorting the running between the wickets.

In West’s innings, after the initial flurry, no batsman looked secure, even Joe Bird (21no), who scored the winning runs.

But they were much indebted to Malvern’s habit of conceding wides, with 30 in total.

Malvern seemed to have the game won by the final over as the villagers needed an unlikely 13 to win. With two balls left, the target was reduced to seven.

The penultimate ball was turned from a two to a three as the fielder failed to handle the ball cleanly.

Bird then hit the ball to the wall and the fielder’s throw bounced off the bowler for an overthrow, leading to four winning runs.

Worcester Nomads ‘A’ tucked in behind the Division One leaders at the Royal Grammar School with a 17-run victory over their ‘B’ team.

The ‘A’ side’s batting, with the notable exception of opener Sam Roberts (37), was below-par.

In their previous match, Paul Pickering and Richard Henry took just 17 balls to score 50 from the bat, mainly hitting the ball back hard and straight.

But the same strategy failed and Pickering’s 10 took 19 balls and Henry’s 10 needed nine as the ‘B’ side fielded well.

Had it not been for wayward bowling giving away 32 wides, the first string would not have reached 111-6.

Paul Gardner claimed 1-21, while Dominic Badger picked up 2-29.

The ‘B’ team managed just 27 from four overs as Gardner (7) was bowled by Liam O’Driscoll.

With the opening pace and swing of O’Driscoll and Henry over with, the innings got under way.

Guy Davies (10) was run-out with the score on 52-2 before Matt Ormerod conceded just two in an over with Joe Laugher caught and bowled and Nick Jones stumped.

Ollie Ranscombe (15no) and Badger (15) struggled as Nomads ‘B’ finished on 94-5.

Nomads ‘B’ (117-4) then lost to Old Elizabethans (118-1) with five balls left.

Ranscombe (28) and Jamie Oliver (26no) rallied but OEs kept their unbeaten run intact.

On Monday, Nomads ‘C’ face Rushwick in Division Two.
