WELLAND hit back from missing two penalties to beat Broadway United 2-0 after extra-time to reach the Worcestershire FA Minor Cup semi-final.

James Lush and Ben Pearson both squandered spot kicks in normal time before the hosts prevailed with two Tim Lewis strikes.

The game, played at Dyson Perrins Academy, began evenly with both defences on top and few chances were created by either side.

Stratford Alliance Division One outfit Broadway had the first opportunity after 10 minutes when their lively winger beat several defenders following a mazy run and forced Welland keeper Niall Hacking to make a brave save at his feet.

It was a similar story at the other end when Lush and Omar Elmougy both went close only to see their shots well saved by the visiting keeper.

Broadway should have taken the lead on the half-hour but their effort from a corner was headed over from close range.

The second-half began in the same way as the first with neither side wanting to give their opponents an inch.

Jim Owen and James Nightingale made a series of blocks before Hacking pushed a Broadway effort round the post to keep the game goalless.

With both keepers on top form and producing some outstanding saves, it was looking like extra-time would be needed.

However, with 10 minutes left, Lush burst forward and was tripped just inside the box for a penalty. Lush picked himself up and took the spot-kick only to see the keeper make yet another fine stop.

With Welland pushing forward, Lush was again upended in the area two minutes from time by a last-ditch tackle and another penalty was awarded. Pearson stepped up and fired straight against the woodwork.

Welland looked stronger and fitter in extra-time, creating more chances and finally took a deserved lead mid-way through the first period via Lewis' effort after a powerful run.

The second period was just as tight but Welland's teamwork and commitment shone through and a semi-final place was sealed late on. Lush's run from out wide saw him square to Lewis and he fired home.
