WORCESTER Nomads’ Barrie Rees has been voted the Midlands Club Cricket Conference groundsman of the year for 2013.

Following a nomination from the Worcestershire outfit, Rees will receive the award at the MCCC dinner and presentation on March 7.

The outstanding marks awarded for both the pitch and outfield at the Bransford- based club were highly significant in him gaining the prestigious regional accolade.

Nomads were given the highest pitch marks in the whole of the Birmingham and District Premier League.

For the outfield, they were equal third with Kidderminster Victoria as only Premier Division champions Shrewsbury and West Bromwich Dartmouth were considered to have superior facilities.

The achievement reflects the commitment, hard work and expertise provided by Rees in 2013 and previous years.

Many of the opposing clubs in the league also stage county second team and Minor Counties cricket matches.

However, Nomads return to the Worcestershire League this year after their relegation from Division Three.

Meanwhile, the Birmingham league’s annual meeting will be at Moseley Cricket Club at 8pm on Wednesday, January 22, when the 2014 fixtures will be approved.

All clubs have been notified and there will be a £50 fine for those that fail to attend.

Outgoing president Rex Ingram presents the chain of office to his successor Jamie Fleet and the player of the year trophy will be awarded to Brockhampton’s Chris Boroughs.

The Albert Birkenhead Trophy for the young player goes to Shrewsbury’s Steve Leach and umpire of the year is Kenneth Horden.
