CHELTENHAM Association League Senior Charity Cup holders Upton Town progressed through to the quarter- finals this season thanks to a penalty shoot-out.

The Hill Centre-based side, who shocked Charlton Rovers 2-1 in the final at Cheltenham Town last May, knocked out RSG 4-2 on spot-kicks after the sides were level at 1-1.

Lawrence Smith was on target for Upton from open play with Andrew Costall replying for the visitors.

Upton head to Staunton and Corse in the last eight on Saturday, January 25.

Fourth-placed Town resume their Division One campaign at home to Gala Wilton Reserves tomorrow, while Hanley Swan host RSG (both 2pm). The previous weekend, Jake Hall and Luke Kitchen scored for Upton in a 2-2 league draw with RSG and Hanley lost 5-1 to Gloucester Elmleaze.

  • Welland won 5-2 at Kings Reserves in the Junior Charity Cup second round with goals from James Lush (2), Jon Williams (2) and substitute Ben Pearson.

They will visit Southside Reserves in the quarterfinals on January 25.

Title-chasing Welland are three points behind leaders Cheltenham Patriots in third position.
