THE Worcestershire Golf Club’s major match-play tournament, for the Meredith Cup, reached its climax in a 36-hole final between Mike Hanna and Phil Birch.
Improving golfer Hanna was seeking the match-play double, having recently won the foursomes knock-out title with partner Richard Sebok.
Receiving eight strokes from his opponent, 14-handicapper Hanna finished the morning round four-up and, while Birch fought back, conceding no more holes, eventually losing 4&3.
Meanwhile, two of the club’s top golfers, county players Steven Lane and Lucy Walton, both reduced their handicaps in medal rounds this week.
In the men’s October medal, Lane (handicap +1) carded a gross 66 (nett 67) to reduce his playing handicap to +2, while in the ladies’ Winners’ Cup, junior star Walton returned a nett 68 to reduce her playing handicap from four to three.
Good scores in the men’s October medal also came from Division One players Neil Bogart (handicap 12) and Andy McCabe (5), both with nett 69.
Stuart Green (14) won Division Two with nett 73 from James Hayburn (15) and Roger Bradley (15) both on nett 75. Division Three winner Mike Elston (19) came in with nett 71.
In the ladies’ 18-hole stableford saw Corinne Mills take the Silver Division with 29 points, Janet-Manning Cox the Bronze Division, with 29, and Jill Mico the Copper Division with 26.
