Newey leads local party home at Beacon tester
8:40am Tuesday 22nd October 2013 in Sport
ATHLETES from Malvern Joggers and Malvern Hash competed in the town’s challenging Beacon Race.
Described as an ‘all terrain tough race with spectacular views — not for the faint hearted’, the event didn’t disappoint.
The race starts at Rose Bank Gardens then weaves its way up to the top of the Worcestershire Beacon then down via North Hill and back to Rose Bank Gardens and the finish line.
The first local competitor home was Mercia runner John Newey, who clocked 47 minutes, 38 seconds for overall third place.
Malvern Joggers Sam Burnage and Chris Smallman both came in at 52 minutes for 22nd and 25th place respectively.
The first local woman, and third overall, was Megan Judge, who returned to form with a bang, knocking 15 minutes off her personal best time for the course.
The Joggers claimed the prize for first local female, which went to Claire Gilbert, who just missed out on breaking the one-hour mark by 37 seconds.
Malvern Joggers’ Steve Ollis, who had competed in the Park run that morning, had a running battle with his running nemesis Steve Roode. At the half-way stage, it was neck-and-neck, but by the finish Roode’s was the victor.
