Shield joy for Ledbury
1:29pm Friday 13th September 2013 in Sport
LEDBURY Rugby Club powered into the North Midlands Shield quarter-finals with a 39-17 home win over higher-ranked Aston Old Edwardians.
The Midlands Two West (North) outfit played with the slope in the first-half and went ahead through a 21st-minute penalty.
But Ledbury hit back quickly when pressure led to a penalty from full-back George Bennion.
Skipper Jock Welch finished off a forward drive five minutes later and Bennion converted from the touchline.
The Ross Road side added a superb second try started in their own 22 by Ali Park and finished off by centre Kevin Murphy’s strong run.
Aston reduced the deficit with a converted try but scrum-half Tom Houlbrooke ensured Ledbury led 22-10 at half-time with a fine solo score. Bennion converted and added a penalty.
The visitors added a second converted effort but prop Arron Almond’s short-range try, again improved by Bennion, ensured the win with 10 minutes remaining.
Forwards coach Elliot Bee capped a fine performance by scoring under the posts and Bennion converted again.
Ledbury kick off their Midlands Three West (South) campaign at home to Pinley tomorrow (3pm).
