COLIN Bennett continued his dominance at the Worcestershire and Herefordshire Closed Championships by winning the men’s open for the 15th consecutive year.
Bennett, who is currently ranked sixth in the International Tennis Federation’s world rankings for over 35s, was pushed in a close final by teenager Jamie Marks in front of a vocal crowd at Malven’s Manor Park club.
The Herefordshire 37-yearold’s triumph was one of the highlights of the competition, which saw adults and juniors contest singles and doubles events across all age groups played in fine conditions.
Wins for Malvern players came later in the week-long event with Marks claiming the under 18s singles and under 18s doubles alongside Seb Timmermans.
There was another win for doubles specialists Tobie Timmermans and Adam Stanton in the under 16s category.
Other impressive performances came from Alex Parker with victories in the under 14s and under 16s singles, while popular Manor Park star Ellie Fleming won the girls’ under 16s trophy in a tense clash against Kate Horsburgh.
A great turn-out for the under eights and nines events gave the older players an indication of the future standard of junior tennis in the county.
There were also victories for Isabelle O’Connor, Stuart Shannon, Paulina Jurkowska and Patrick Niedzwiedz amid tight competition.
Fine conditions during the week and a supportive ethos among the players was capped by a presentation of prizes from Ian King, former president of the Lawn Tennis Association.
