Teen Siket makes it a hat-trick of titles

THE Malvern League’s individual championships at The Forum, Malvern Theatres, attracted more than 60 players.

Sixteen-year-old Michael Siket retained his title in the Paperstation main singles event for the third year running with a confident 11-2, 11-2, 11-9 win over Joe Higgs.

In the women’s singles, Ann Barnes kept her title for the eighth year running with a 11-1, 11-5, 11-5 victory over Liz Hallam.

The Roy Holland veterans singles was one of four finals that involved Nigel Foreshew.

He lost to Chris Hewitt 11-4, 11-6, 12-10 but then teamed up with Barnes to retain their mixed doubles crown with a comfortable 11-5, 14- 12, 11-7 win over Siket and Beryl Shammon.

Foreshew also won the inter-divisional doubles with Will Jones thanks to a straight games success over Toby Wren and Ray Davies 11-4, 11-9, 11-6.

The Express TV Services main doubles saw one of the hardest-fought matches with Foreshew and Craig Preece holding their own against Siket and Brett Brining until losing 7-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 11-3.

A Paytons Solicitors supervets event for over 60s was introduced and claimed by Trevor Davies with a convincing 11-4, 11-8, 11-2 win over Ray Page.

In the junior singles for under 18s, Siket had no difficulty beating Matt Hodges 11-3, 11-4, 11-3.

The Paytons Solicitors cadet singles for under 15s saw Dominic Weston beat Ben Meredith 11-6, 12-10, 8- 11, 11-4.

The Brian Thompson Division One singles went to Jack Higgs with a hardfought 11-4, 11-7, 10-12, 8-11, 11-6 triumph over Preece.

Barnes and Hallam beat Shammon and Collette James in the women’s doubles 11-3, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7. The Ledbury Exhaust Division Two singles final went to Matt Lang who beat Martin Snee 9-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6 after coming back from being a game down.

Lang was also involved in the Meredith Brothers Division Two doubles with Nick Haggar as they won 6-11, 13- 11, 11-9, 12-10 against Snee and Toby Wren.

A Banded Cadet singles competition for youngsters from the league’s coaching club, held on Sunday evenings at Dyson Perrins Academy, attracted eight players.

Ethan Webb beat Luke Meredith 11-8, 11-3 in the final.
