OLYMPIC gold medallist Carl Hester is ready to leave Great Britain’s European Championship team for the good of future international dressage riders.

Newent ace Hester, 45, joined individual champion Charlotte Dujardin and Laura Bechtolsheimer in winning the Olympic team title last summer.

The GB riders aim to build on the stunning success at August’s Europeans in Denmark, the 2014 World Equestrian Games in France and the 2016 Rio Olympics.

But Hester said: “I would be available for the Europeans if they want me.

“But it would be great to give some of the other riders a chance this year because we might need them for future teams. I would like to have a year where I campaign smaller shows with the younger horses.”

With his Olympic charge Uthopia to be sold, Hester aims Dances with Wolves at the World Games and Rio, while he also has prospect Fine Time.
