RUGBY: Tisdale calls for ‘no fear’

MALVERN Rugby Club host fifth-placed Newton Abbot tomorrow (2.15pm) with head coach Nick Tisdale saying they will meet fire with fire in their bid to avoid relegation.

The Spring Lane outfit hope to turn their luck around after a 24-3 defeat at high-flying Weston-superMare last weekend.

Tisdale expects his team to get a result against a tough Newton side who hammered them 71-7 in September.

He said: “There’s nothing to fear — we are good enough.

“The boys are keen to get out there and improve their performance with more attention to detail.

“Newton Abbot conceded 55 points against London Irish Wild Geese two weeks ago and when we played Irish we competed and only lost by four. We’ll meet fire with fire.

“I want to get something out of the game and expect that.”

Malvern gave a battling performance at Weston with the hosts surprised to see Malvern in the bottom three and Tisdale believes they could have got more out of the match.

He continued: “It is disappointing we did not come away with something from Weston, who are the form team in the league at the moment. I was pleased with our performance.

“It’s our most complete display since I’ve been back in Malvern, apart from a few mistakes here and there we would have got something out of the game.

“We made little mistakes and when you’re playing against good sides at the top of the league, they will punish you.

“When we have the ball in their half we need to have a bit more composure, patience and stop rushing things and giving away the ball.”

Malvern are now six points from safety and Tisdale insists, with the new coaching and structure at the club, they can still survive and compete in National League Three South West this season.

Tisdale added: “Every game is important and we want to win every one.

“We are not panicking at the moment, we are improving week on week and the best is just around the corner.

“If we come fourth from bottom, we have made our goal.”
