WALKS took place locally as part of Malvern’s Walking Festival and were led by Phil Bunyan, David Russell, Bob Baldwin and Garth Lowe, who regularly lead Powick Ramblers.

Powick’s next walk is this evening meeting at the Bear and Ragged Staff, Bransford, for a four-mile walk around the local footpaths, led by Phil. Please meet at 6.30pm.

There is a daytime walk on Thursday, June 14, led by David and Ginnie Russell. Meet at 10am at the Royal Oak, Broadwas (GR757553) for a fivemile walk around Blackfields, Cotheridge Church and the River Teme.

Advance notice is given of an open garden and afternoon tea at Stanbrook Grange, Frog Lane, Callow End, on Saturday, June 16. The one-acre garden on the edge of the Old Hills is full of flowers and shrubs. Entry is £5 to include tea and is in aid of The Friends of St Peter’s. Please park in the village or at the village hall.

To coincide with the arrival of the Olympic Torch through Powick on May 24, Powick Primary School hosted its own Olympiad on Powick Playing Field.

Children from five other local schools joined in activities from basketball, rugby, cricket, dance, art and craft, rowing, dodge ball, athletics and much more.

The 350 children, from years four to six, from Powick, Leigh and Bransford, Callow End, Madresfield, Rushwick and Suckley were able to choose four activities in which to participate, and fine weather was the order of the day.

Powick Bell Ringers marked the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a full peal of the six bells of St Peter’s Church last Saturday, lasting a little over three hours.

The team was Paul Smith (captain), Roger Gurney, Geoff Titmuss, Colin Ward, Sarah Tombs and Nigel Davies.

Powick Guild met in May and welcomed Jude Johnson, who runs a Hedgehog Rescue Centre in the village. She explained how hedgehogs are the gardener’s friend in eating caterpillars and beetles, but which suffer injuries from predators and human activity, caused by pesticides and traffic. A live hedgehog was brought to the meeting.

Refreshments were served after a vote of thanks to Jude.

The ladies of Soft Option, the Appalachian Step dancers, performed outside the Three Nuns last Thursday evening, accompanied on fiddles and guitar.

The 7th Worcester Cubs took part in a six-a-side football competition last month but, after winning three years in a row, failed to win the trophy this year.

However, a weekend camp has been arranged for June at the Scouts Association’s site in Almondsbury near Bristol. The open day at Link Nurseries held recently raised £1,200 from the sale of plants, to be used within the centre; and from the sale of tea and cake, plus a raffle, another £120 was raised for use by the Friends of Link Nurseries.
