West Malvern

DIARY dates increase as Christmas approaches, and there are several to note for the coming week. Tomorrow (Saturday) at 7.30pm there will be another recital on the newly refurbished organ in St James's Church by prizewinning young Norwegian organist Jarle Fagerheim. Jarle, who played his first recital in Stavanger Cathedral aged just 15, won prizes in competitions for young organists in both Norway and the UK last year. His repertoire ranges from the baroque classics to jazzy "fireworks" of the 21st Century The recital is the direct result of a chance internet search! Back in March of this year, Jarle, a council member of the Norwegian Greens, did a Google search on the key words 'green' and 'organist' and happened upon the name of John Raine, St. James's' organist and Green Party district councillor for Malvern Hills . E-mail correspondence ensued, and Jarle accepted an invitation to visit Malvern, to address the local Green Party and to give a recital at St.James's. .

Songs of Celebration' will be the theme of the 10.30am service at St James's Church on Sunday, December 9 to mark the birthday of the Reverend Douglas Green, for many years a well known and loved resident of West Malvern and still a frequent and welcome visitor since. The service, to be conducted by the Reverend Rosemary Herbert, will be followed by cake and a glass of wine to mark this notable landmark for Dougie, who will be 90 on Tuesday.

Those with strong digestions can then cross the road to the St James's Primary School Christmas Fair (not Fayre' hooray!) from 11.30am-2pm, where there will be mulled wine, hot chocolate and a vegetarian curry as well as games, crafts and a bookstall, and a repeat appearance of the popular Wii computer game!
