SADLY the original copy of the report on Mike and Margaret’s farewell party was mislaid so I will try to rewrite my report.
Mike and Margaret’s farewell Sunday started with a Holy Communion service at Birtsmorton Church, a very emotional occasion.
Mike and Margaret then returned to Berrow for their final service at St Faith’s, a church filled to capacity, which was enjoyed by all with many surprise elements throughout the morning.
Coffee followed in the village hall. The congregation then beat a hasty retreat to Birtsmorton Court to contribute to the surprise farewell party in the Garden Room.
At 1.45pm Mike and Margaret were collected from the Vicarage by Ted Hill in his vintage red fire engine and chauffered to Birtsmorton Court where a hearty welcome awaited them with a truly wonderful repast where the tables were veritably groaning courtesy of the many wonderful people in the benefice.
The guests included many families that Mike had married during his nine years in our benefice and subsequent christenings.
Presentations were made to Margaret and Mike and Andy Holt gave a wonderful tribute to our wonderful couple.
A cheque was presented from the benefice and friends, jelly babies were shared and a sung Gaelic blessing together with a wonderful quartet played suitable music in the garden.
At the end of a truly remarkable day Mike and Margaret returned to the vicarage with so many treasured memories and gifts totally overwhelmed and with lots of time to reflect and hopefully to a wonderful start to a long and happy retirement for them both in Cheshire.
Our thanks to the very many who contributed to Mike and Margaret’s farewell Sunday, this includes organisers, suppliers of feast and to Nigel and Rosalie for the loan of their Garden Room and facilities.
To Ted and family for the use of the fire engine including the polishing and use of helmets, our quartet and Doug our photographer.
Sadly, this week Mike’s beloved dad, Bob, passed away peacefully in Tewkesbury at the grand age of 101.
We offer Mike and his family our sincere condolences. Bob’s funeral service will be held at St Faith’s, Berrow, this Saturday at noon.
Congratulations to Nigel and Rosalie Dawes as they celebrate their golden wedding anniversary this weekend with a family party.
