A FANTASTIC summer for Upton in Bloom ended with more success last night (Wednesday, September 24)as the group scooped a prestigious Silver Gilt award in the 2008 Britain in Bloom competition.
The award matches their achievement in last year’s competition, and follows Upton’s Gold and overall win in the Heart of England in Bloom awards earlier this month.
Upton in Bloom members Peter and Diane Bellamy, Jackie Surtees and Gill Newman, and town mayor Tim Perry travelled to Chester for the awards ceremony.
Judges seemed to have set the bar high this year, with only nine out of the 60 total entries winning Gold.
Mr Bellamy said that although they had hoped they might win gold, Silver Gilt was a fantastic result.
“We’re really pleased, and I think we did almost as well as we possibly could have,” he said. “A number of the categories were won with a Silver Gilt so we cannot complain at all.
“It has been a brilliant year for us. We are all still on a high after the past couple of weeks.”
Mrs Surtees said: “We’re very pleased with a Silver Gilt. The write-up on us was very good, and generally the comments on our entry were very, very positive.”
After being named the outright winner for Heart of England in Bloom 2008 earlier this month, Upton in Bloom has been invited to have a stand at the Malvern Autumn Show, taking place at the Three Counties Showground this weekend.
Then on Monday (September 29) the work starts all over again, with members and volunteers meeting near the King’s Head at 2pm to wash down seats, railings and litter bins along the waterfront, and do some digging in preparation for winter planting. Anyone who would like to help out is welcome to join in.
