WILDLIFE experts are running an evening course to help people get even closer to their favourite animals.

Members of the Worcestershire Recorders, a local society that record wildlife found in the county, are leading the discovering microscopes session at Lower Smite Farm, headquarters of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust.

The evening aims to help participants to become more familiar with microscopes and the fascinating world that they can open up.

Martin Skirrow said: “Many regard microscopes as the realm of white-coated experts but nothing could be further from the truth.

“Using a microscope has absolutely transformed my appreciation of the natural world; the detail that you can see is phenomenal.

"We’re all familiar with bumblebees in our gardens, for example, but it’s only when you look at one down a microscope that you start to realise they have tiny hairs on each of their wings.”

The session will show participants how to set up a microscope as well as demonstrating the importance of lighting specimens both from above and below.

Members will also be able to advise on suitable microscopes as well as useful websites and identification keys for different species of wildlife.

Mr Skirrow added: “Places are limited for the session because we want to spend time covering the basics as well as helping individuals to get the most from the experience.

“Microscopy offers great fun and opportunities for everyone. It’s perfect for those who find themselves unable to walk quite so far as they used to and, for spouses who may not share the same hobbies, it’s reassuring to know that their partners will be kept from under their feet.”

The evening on Tuesday, June 9, runs from 6.30pm to 9pm and costs £10 per person.
