One particular success story was Hanley Castle's Georgina Meacham.

Miss Meacham, 16, who achieved one A*, two A grades, four B grades and three C grades, said: "I know my mum would be very proud.

"It's been a tough year, but I'm pleased with my results and happy with the amount of money raised. We donated it to Headway, which specialises in head injuries, as this is the organisation which would have helped my mum had she survived."

Hanley Castle saw 70 percent of students gain five or more GCSEs, including English and mathematics, with ten percent of all GCSEs awarded at A* grade, and 28 percent either A* or A.

Notable individual performances include Emma Witherford who secured six A*, three A grades, one Distinction and a B grade, along with Leah Daly who achieved five A*, three A, one Distinction* and one Distinction grades.

Headteacher Stuart Wetson said: "I am pleased to see our overall five A* to C grades, including English and Maths, increase at such a rate thus bucking the trend nationally.

"I am delighted that our students have done so well, made considerable improvements compared to last year and achieved so much this year, if we continue this upward trajectory who knows what we can achieve in the future."

Malvern College pupils scored 60 percent A* to A grades. A third of all results were A*s and 27 pupils scored six A*s or more.

Malvern St James Girls’ School also achieved best ever results.
