MID-Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston has suggested to ministers gym membership could be tax deductible.
The Conservative MP for Evesham and Droitwich has floated the idea in the Commons during questions to Chancellor Philip Hammond and his Treasury colleagues.
Mr Huddleston pointed to the health benefits, which would also benefit the NHS in the long term.
The Mid Worcestershire MP said: "Does the Chancellor agree that consideration should be given to making expenditures such as gym membership tax-deductible in recognition of their health benefits, and ultimately cost-saving benefits to the NHS?"
Treasury minister Mel Stride replied: "Perhaps I'm in need of the gym, possibly.
"I'll take that as an early Budget representation, but you should be aware that we already have various tax-free reliefs in respect of health in the workplace.
"That is check-ups, eye tests, a cycle to work scheme, on site workplace gym membership, welfare counselling and of course our soft drinks industry levy, which has seen a number of companies improve the quality health-wise of their products."
