AROUND 120 Bromsgrove pet owners attended a free first aid for pets course at Bromsgrove School.

The event on April 18, which was hosted by Clent Hills Vets, taught dog and cat owners how to deal with a number of medical situations.

These included what to do in an emergency, looking out for basic health signs, checking a pet's temperature, wound management, dealing with blood loss and identifying and minimising shock.

Registered veterinary nurse and pet physiotherapist Emily Ashdown delivered the presentation, which also covered how to treat wasp and bee stings, handling heat stroke and emergencies in the park.

Guest Tori Newton-Coombs, owner of sprocker spaniel Theodore, said: "I love to go exploring in the countryside with my crazy spaniel but when I watch him bulldoze through bushes, ponds and even barbed wire fences I have always been really worried.

"I knew how useless I would be if an accident were to occur. I now feel confident that I could react to a range of different emergency circumstances and step in to avoid potential incidents.

"It was a really helpful event for pet owners to attend.”

The event raised more than £250 for the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust through the sale of pet first aid kids and a charity raffle. The trust is Clent Hills Vets' nominated charity for 2018.
