“Go now” is the message to embattled leader of UKIP Henry Bolton from one of Worcestershire’s MEPs.

The party’s National Executive committee passed a motion of no confidence in Mr Bolton’s leadership on Sunday night; the deputy leader Margot Parker and other senior members, have also resigned from leadership roles in the party, saying he should step down.

And the message from one of the West Midlands region’s three UKIP MEPs, the verdict is unequivocal. Bill Etheridge has a banner across the top of his personal website which says: “My message to Henry Bolton: Go Now”

Mr Etheridge, who has been described as being on the ‘Farage-ist economic libertarian’ wing of the party has stood twice before for the leadership of UKIP, coming third in July 2016. He then stood again in October 2016 and put his name forward in the July 2017 election which saw Mr Bolton elected but withdrew before the vote.

A spokesman for the MEP declined to comment on whether he would stand again, but said a statement was expected in the next few days.

Another MEP for the region, James Carver, who is based in Worcester is currently engaged, as one of the party’s assistant deputy leaders,  in negotiations to resolve the issue.

He said: “I can make no comment at this time as I am involved in ongoing private discussions with the leader and others to find a resolution to the satisfaction of the membership.”

The situation would perhaps not have been helped by the resignation of another MEP Mike Hookem as one of Mr Carver’s fellow assistant deputy leaders.

The third MEP for the West Midlands Jill Seymour declined to comment on the convulsions in her party which could see members electing their fifth leader in 19 months.

Mr Bolton’s leadership of UKIP has come under fire after the emergence of texts by his new girlfriend Jo Marney saying Meghan Markle would ‘taint’ the royal family due to her mixed-race heritage.
