MALVERN in Bloom is looking for people who take pride in their gardens to take part in its annual residents’ competitions.

The local competitions are separate from the town’s main entry into the Heart of England in Bloom campaign, and aim to include gardens of all shapes and sizes, especially those that may be hidden away from public view.

Cynthia Palmer, one of the organisers of this year’s contest, said: “More and more people who are proud of their gardens take part every year.

“Although you may not think your garden is worth entering, we are certain you will be surprised at the new range of categories, which will ensure that whatever the size of your garden, or whether you prefer to grow veg or display hanging baskets, your entry will be warmly welcomed.”

This year there will be awards for the best front garden, best rear garden, best vegetable and fruit lovers garden, best courtyard or limited space garden, residents who garden with assistance and who may live in communal or sheltered accommodation, and for the best hanging baskets or container displays.

The deadline for entries is Saturday, June 30, and judges will be making their rounds on Thursday, July 19.

“There is no formal theme this year but the judges will be looking for colour, variety, visual impact and originality,” said Mrs Palmer.

“They are also keen to encourage environmentally friendly practices such as planting for bees and butterflies and home composting.”

Entry forms are available at the tourist information centre in Church Street, Malvern Library in Graham Road or from Lyndsey Davies at Malvern Town Council on 01684 566667 or by e-mailing ldavies@malvern-tc.org.uk.
