Worcestershire County Councillors from across the political parties have signed a giant birthday to celebrate 70 years of adult social care.

A special birthday party will be also be held later this year to thank carers from across Worcestershire for the contribution that they make.

Adult Social Care was launched when The National Assistance Act was passed in 1948 and has allowed social workers and social care assistants to help many thousands of people in Worcestershire to lead independent, dignified lives.

Councillor Adrian Hardman, cabinet member with responsibility for adult social care, said: "Our Adult Social Care team work incredibly hard and the 70th birthday of Adult Social Care is a great opportunity to celebrate them.

"The 70th birthday of the NHS this year has deservedly been celebrated but adult social care is every bit as important.

"More than 40 per cent of the county council's budget is spent on adult social care, but demand is growing and like other councils around the country our adult services are facing real financial pressures.

"We are supporting the campaign to highlight the need for additional money to ensure that good quality support is available for those who need it.

"The NHS has had a birthday gift with a cash injection of £20b, we now need the Government to show their appreciation of adult social care in the same way."
