HUNDREDS of youngsters descended on Bromsgrove School this month to take part in the biggest ever Worcestershire Summer School Games.

The games on Tuesday, July 3 saw children aged from seven to 17 go head-to-head in an Olympics-style competition, battling it out for the title of Worcestershire School Games Champion in 10 different sports.

Alvechurch Middle School kicked of the opening ceremony in style with their dance performance, before Trinity High School took the stage and the games were declared open.

Scott Smith, chair of the local organising committee, said: "The school games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire million of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport and get physically active.

"We’re delighted to welcome a record number of participants to the Worcestershire Summer School Games and wish to pay tribute to everyone involved in making today’s event a success, from young leaders to sponsors and local organisations.”

Alongside the competitions was a school games cultural village where young people could take part in fun activities.

The event saw its biggest health and cultural village to date, featuring 19 activity providers and organisations, including the police and fire service, a smoothie bike and 7m climbing wall.

The games was supported by a team of 125 young leaders, made up of budding reporters, photographers and video journalists.
