TEMPORARY traffic lights on London Road in Worcester caused traffic problems for rush-hour drivers this morning (Monday, January 22).

The lights were put in place by Severn Trent who were carrying out essential works on a damaged fire hydrant over the weekend.

Residents said the traffic lights, positioned near Tesco Esso Express and Waitrose were not working at least between 4 and 8am causing tail backs up to the Commandery.

Gordon Jennings, of Astwood Road, Worcester, was driving towards Evehsam at 4am to delivering newspapers when whe became trapped due to the lights.

He said: "I feel very annoyed about. It is not acceptable. It took me over half-an-hour to get back into town just due to the traffic lights."

County Councillor Alan Amos, cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: "The temporary lights were put in place by Severn Trent who were carrying out essential works on a damaged fire hydrant along the London Road over the weekend. The lights are being manually controlled, reinstatement is in progress and they are due to be removed this evening (Monday, January 22)."
