A 28 year old Evesham man, currently serving a three year jail sentence, will spend an additional three months behind bars for handling a stolen pick-up truck and driving dangerously.

At Gloucester crown court today Ross Corbett of Rynal Place, Evesham appeared via video link from Portland prison and pleaded guilty to the offences as well as a charge of driving without insurance.

He entered his pleas just two weeks before a scheduled jury trial.

Prosecuting Nicholas Fridd told the court that Corbett was arrested after he reversed a Mazda pick up truck into a police car. He had stolen the pick up from Sherborne Farm, nr Cheltenham, three weeks earlier, on 4 November 2016.

"He was arrested driving the Mazda pick up which belonged to Ian Jeffries. It had been stolen from a farm along with a quantity of farm items valued at around £20,000 on 4 November" Mr Fridd told the court.

"He had been followed through Kidderminster when he stopped on Green Forge Lane and reversed the car into the police car, which is the offence of driving dangerously. The defendant ran away but was later arrested. At interview he made no comment to all questions and was charged with handling stolen goods."

In mitigation, Jon Lynch for Corbett said his client had involved himself with members of the travelling community where he was offered an opportunity to make some money and 'found himself in this situation.'

"He understands the realistic custodial sentence this means and has listened to sensible advice this morning and pleaded guilty to both charges so I ask for some credit for that," Mr Lynch said.

Judge Michael Cullum told Corbett that at just 28 years old this was already his eighth court appearance.

"There was no damage or injury caused by reversing into the police car so I accept the dangerous driving element is limited to the potential danger of this action" Judge Cullum told him.

"Your list of convictions is largely minor offences but you are already serving a sentence for a range of drug offences as well as possession of a bladed article which means a custodial sentence for this offence is inevitable."

Sentencing Corbett, Judge Cullum said he had considered totality and the time age of offence when imposing just three months on top of his current three year sentence.

Corbett will also be disqualified from driving for 20 months, he added.
