A WORCESTER student who admitted going on a drunken freshers' week rampage in which he damaged cars in a city street told magistrates he had been "very stupid".

Joshua Pirie, a student currently living in Richmond Road, admitted three charges of criminal damage when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday, October 20.

Karen Cockitt, prosecuting, said Pirie was walking along Wylds Lane at 4.50am on the morning of Friday, September 23, when he picked up a rock, "the size of a football".

Miss Cockitt said he then used it to cause damage, breaking off wing mirrors, smashing windows and denting three vehicles, a blue Ford Galaxy, a white Peugeot Partner, and a black Ford Fiesta, parked in the street.

After the incident was reported, police officers arrived and arrested the 20-year-old.

Miss Cockitt said the damage had caused "great inconvenience" to the owners of the vehicles, who had to get them repaired.

Belinda Ariss, defending, said Pirie was a student from Gloucester, who was doing a sports course in the city.

Miss Ariss explained it had been freshers' week, and described Pirie as a young man who had far too much to drink, saying it was completely out of character and he was extremely sorry.

After magistrates asked the defendant if he wished to comment on his actions, Pirie told the court he had been very stupid and accepted if it had been a vehicle he owned, he would have been angry.

"There is nothing I can say," Pirie added.

Magistrates ordered Pirie to pay compensation of £800.19 for the damage and repair of the vehicles, and costs of £135.
