THIS was how some of Worcester Technical College's finest prepared for their educational studies back in 1970s.

Students using the college annexe in the former Undenominational School in St Martin's Gate had to contend with a community of travellers – or in the parlance of the day, "a tinker encampment" – on their doorstep.

An eloquent statement from the students complained: " We have had to contend with the demolition of surrounding premises, this we accepted, for heaven forbid that we should stand in the way of progress, but when we are forced to compete with the noise from a neighbouring tinker encampment, our tempers became frayed.

"The noise of children playing and the continuous hammering on scrap metal plays heavily on our nerves."

The area was later cleared as part of the redevelopment of the Blockhouse

district of the city.
