A SCHOOL in Wolverley has been recognised for the support it gives its students who have caring responsibilities.

Wolverley CE Secondary School has been presented with a bronze Young Carers in Schools Award.

To achieve the award the school demonstrated how it shows support by raising the profile of young carers with governors, staff and students.

Additionally, Wolverley CE Secondary School had to designate members of staff whose responsibility it is to raise pupil awareness about illness, disability and young carers, while also ensuring that young carers are offered the opportunity to talk and be given advice on additional services available to them.

Bryn Thomas, Head teacher at Wolverley CE Secondary School, said: “We have four students who are young carers and whilst when they are at school we try to ensure they have the same experiences as their peers, their lives outside of the school environment can be extremely different.

“That is why it’s important for us to have processes in place to ensure that their individual requirements are catered for.

“We’re delighted to have achieved the Young Carers in Schools Bronze Award. The awards programme has been vital in helping us to understand the needs of our young carers and offer them all the support we can.”

He added the school is now working towards achieving the Young Carers in Schools Silver Award.
