A HEREFORDSHIRE man has been sentenced to 20 years for child sex offences dating back more than 50 years in Malvern.

Michael Powell, 72, of Kington, in Herefordshire, appeared at Worcester Crown Court and received a sentence of 20 years in prison.

He pleaded guilty on Monday, December 22 last year to seven count of indecent assaults. He was then found guilty at Hereford Crown Court on Monday, July 13 of three counts of rape of a female under the age of 16 and three further counts of indecent assault.

Powell committed the offences between 1965 and 1970 in Malvern.

DI Andy Price of West Mercia Police said: ''This was a protracted and ground breaking investigation that spanned two continents in order to obtain vital evidence from a very brave victim, who came forward after many years of fear and worry.

"We worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service and American Law Enforcement, learning many valuable lessons along the way in such global operations.

"The investigating officer showed tremendous tenacity, innovation and compassion in driving this enquiry through to a successful conclusion with Michael Powell receiving a substantial prison sentence.

"We want and encourage victims to come forward knowing they will have our full support, and for offenders to realise they will be investigated how ever old the offences may be."

Additionally, West Mercia Police will work hard to prosecute those responsible whilst also taking into account the wishes of the victim.

Police said anyone who has been the victim of a non recent sexual offence can be reassured that if they choose to come forward to they will be treated in a caring and sensitive manner.

The police have specially trained officers and dedicated independent sexual advisors. Those with information can call West Mercia Police on 101.
