HALESOWEN’S first carnival in almost 30 years was hailed a success as up to 3,000 people packed into Highfields Park.

The sun shone on Saturday’s revived event with a host of entertainment, stalls, sideshows and displays.

Carnival chairman Simon Walker, who spearheaded the revival, said: “It was excellent, far better than I imagined it would be and support was amazing.”

“We are definitely looking forward to next year’s event.”

Mr Walker said the feedback had been very positive and many people posted favourable comments on social media.

The day was run as part of the Black Country Festival and in memory of Halesowen born and breed Black Country comic Tommy Mundon, whose widow, Val, was guest of honour.

Grace Dunham was officially crowned as carnival queen by 1957 queen Joyce Knowles and carnival king Shaun James and other dignitaries received a souvenir engraved glass drinks mat.

Highlights of the day included entertainment from the popular comedy female group the Fizzogs, Startime Variety, the Tracey Davis Dance Group, Black Country Gaz and the Halesowen Ukulele Band.

Headlining band Rock Solid were “disappointed” their slot was cut short due to the previous act over-running and Mr Walker said such teething issues would be sorted out for next year, provisionally booked for July 9.
