A WEST Midlands rescue service leader has accused the Government of playing "Russian roulette" with public safety as firefighters prepare for a four-day strike from tonight (Friday).

The Fire Brigades Union is planning its longest-running walkout so far in the dispute over pensions, which has lasted for more than a year.

The strike is due to start at 6pm - a critical time, with bonfire weekend, Diwali celebrations, Halloween and darker nights all making it a traditionally busy time for fire services.

Councillor John Edwards, chairman of West Midlands Fire and Rescue Authority, criticised the Government for failing to find a solution.

He said: “Community risk will increase severely during this strike period, and we ask everyone to take extra care whether at home, driving or out enjoying themselves.

“The Government must carry out their responsibilities to keep citizens safe.

"Their reckless behaviour throughout this dispute has provoked the expected response.

"They must get back round the table with the FBU, negotiate responsibly and stop playing Russian roulette with public safety.”
