Snow slide would be a worthy attraction

"DURING the past few days, we have, after the interval of some years, been treated once more to the rigours of a really old-fashioned English winter," wrote Gazette columnist Ariel 100 years ago.

"The heavy snowstorm of a fortnight ago has given place to sharp frost, and skating and tobogganing have been largely indulged in on the Link Common and the hills.

"I should like to allude to the excellent suggestion thrown out last week that a tobogganing track should be made on the hills. Tobboganing is a most healthy and invigorating form of pastime, and the hills provide excellent scope for indulging it to the full.

"I understand that in Switzerland where the sport is largely patronized, slides are made at comparatively little cost, and I am sure it is a suggestion worthy of commending to the local authority.

"A slide could be made on the hills by banking up the snow, it would provide the unemployed with much-needed work, and would be a source of attraction to residents and visitors alike."
