"AMONG the many attractions at Welland fete on Saturday was a demonstration of escapology by the Vicar, the Rev C J Kay," reported the Gazette 50 years ago.
"Hand cuffs and a rope did not prevent him making good his escape from a sack. The Vicar - a former Borstal chaplain - had hoped to make his escape within three minutes. But actually it took him four.
"To ensure thet everything was above board, Mr Kay was handcuffed with his hands behind his back by two onlookers. He then got into the sack and the same two people tied up the mouth of the sack with a rope. He was then taken behind a screen, and reappeared four minutes later amid applause."
