PARKING is a perennially controversial subject, and it reared its ugly head in the Gazette 25 years ago.

"Free bank holiday parking is to be considered again by Malvern Hills district councillors in June when the whole question of long-term car parking in the district is to be discussed.

"Councillors were assured the matter would be on the agenda after Ledbury councillors Bob Wreford and Philip Sharpe-Neal had urged support for a Ledbury Chamber of Commerce plea for free bank holiday parking.

"Public health committee members heard that black tape had been used to delete the free bank holiday parking provision in Ledbury car parks when it was realised it was out of step with other car parks in the district.

"But councillor Wreford said car parks in Barnards Green and Back Lane had the same masking tape on the pay-and-display signs.

" 'It was not only to the benefit of Ledbury motorists, but those in Malvern as well' he said. 'The Chamber of Commerce's request should be granted, and it should apply to all car parks in the district.' "
