AT 11.35 on Wednesday night, the Malvern Fire Brigade received a call to an outbreak at the Grove House Farm, Guarlford, in the occupation of Mr William Brewer, and the Brigade turned out smartly at 11.45 with the motor fire engine and a full complement of men under Chief Officer Thorp and Lieut Keen. The fire was confined to a large barn, containing the wheat from thirteen acres, a quantity of beans and a waggon-load of oats. Close to the flames were a rick, a Dutch barn and other buildings, but these were not affected. The motor fire engine worked well and there was a plentiful supply of water. At 8 o’clock yesterday morning, the Brigade returned to Malvern.

IT’S fantastic! Malvern are through to the third qualifying round of the FA Amateur Cup - the best they have done in the competition since the 1958-59 season - thanks to this great win at Stafford on Saturday. With this success over English Electric, the Town, situated at the bottom-but-one position in the Worcestershire Combination Division One table, confounded their critics and k.o’d their opponents all with one sharp blow. Let’s hope the critics, who have jibed at the Town’s poor league performances, at their sometimes-ragged forward line, at their sometimes-shaken defence, remember this result for a long time to come.

A HOUSING scheme and the purchase of sorely-needed land for industrial development are among projects to be deferred so that Malvern’s new leisure pool can go ahead. Phase two of Ledbury’s Deer Park estate has been suspended by the cash-starved housing committee of Malvern Hills District Council. The Laburnum House development at Upton-on-Severn has been spared only because it has already started. Industrial land is needed urgently to allow Malvern’s small industries to expand from the land-locked Spring Lane and Malvern Link industrial estates, but money will now not be available currently.
