I have frequently had a word to say about the Boy Scout movement in this column, and I have been asked to remind readers that the Bugle Competition which takes place at the Manor Park on the 13th inst. will afford an opportunity for large numbers of townspeople - provided the weather is more seasonable than at the time I write - to witness and appreciate the good work that is being done by the various local troops. The organisation is growing in popularity amongst the youths of the country, and the training given to the boys in habits of obedience, truthfulness, industry and of physical and mental alertness must be all to the gooid both for the individual and the nation.

50 years ago.

After 21 years devoted service as secretary to Malvern Concert Club - founded by Sir Edward Elgar - Miss Margeret Nicholl was, at last week's annual meeting, presented with a handsome handbag and a gift of money. Miss Nicholl has now retired, althogh she has agreed to remain on the committee. Mrs K M Endersby succeeds her. In a message, Miss Carice Elgar Blake, daughter of Sir Edward and herself a past chairman, expressed regret at being unable to be present. She thanked Miss Nicholl "for her magnificent work in carrying on the club when Mr Troyte Griffith died in 1942, and for the splendid way she steered it through the difficult war years, ever keeping a high standard and good membership".

25 years ago.

Complaints from specialist traders showing at last week's Spring Gardening Show may mean a reduction in the number of horticultural stands outside the main hall. A record crowd of more that 28.000 visited the third annual show, up by 3,000 on last year, and chief executive, Mr Lyn Downes, commented that the turnout was magnificent. But traders said they were unhappy with the number of small stalls dotted about the showground. They said the stalls were encouraging people to spend money before they reached the specialist stands, many of whom have large-scale abnd painstakingly prepared displays. "We are doing all the work, but these people are getting all the money, said one.
