The Croome Point to Point races at Upton on Tuesday drew almost half of Malvern to the racecourse. All roads led to the latter, which is easily accessible from all parts of the area of the Hunt. The crowd was thoroughly representative of the countryside. There were the village squire and those who belong to what may be called the wealthy and 'landed' classes, the tenant farmers mustered in force and many were accompanied by their wives, while the agricultural labourers, who had trudged many miles, also joined in the happy throng.

A team of workmen dismantling an old gasometer off Lower Howsell Road ran for their lives when the tank exploded sending flames 40 feet into the air. But the three men coolly dragged oxy-propane tanks to safety away from the blazing tank. A fire brigade spokesman said it took about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control. It was thought to have been caused when the men accidentally set fire to oil on the surface of the tank. Although the gasometer was only 40 feet away from a gas main, there had been no danger of the fire spreading.
