Villages
West Malvern
THERE was a steady flow of visitors through West Malvern at the weekend, all wishing to see the decorated West Malvern Tap, which was the only adult entry to earn a Gold Award among the 35 wells around the Hills dressed as part of the Malvern Spa Association's event. Devised and presented by Chantal Crawford and her team from the Garden and Nature Club, it was a brilliant evocation of Malvern's Water Cure days in the 19th Century - complete with hapless patient under the douche and a moss-clad donkey! The theme itself could not have been more topical, given the torrential douche from the heavens that hit the village on Saturday morning, when around a third of an inch of mixed rain and hail dropped on the village in the space of few minutes. Congratulations to the Club on yet another win in this competition.
It was organised by Lionel Butcher, who will be the guest speaker at the AGM of the Friends of St James's Church on Wednesday. He will focus on the history of well dressing, the reasons why it grew up in many parts of the country and how it has evolved since ancient times to today's enthusiastic revival. The meeting will start in the church at 7.30pm with the (brief!) AGM annual report on the activities of the Friends who raise funds for the maintenance of our parish church building and grounds. Refreshments available, all welcome.
The BBC's Songs of Praise programme this Sunday will feature the Elim Pentecostal Church and its Regents Theological College which will be moving into the former St James's girls' school premises next year - another chance to learn more about our new neighbours.
And don't forget the school PTA's The Big Brain Quiz at The Bunker, Westminster Bank tomorrow (Saturday, May 10) at 7pm. A fun evening with a twist with refreshments and raffle available, plus prizes which will include quality booze and video games. All welcome, entrance £2 per person on the door.
