Powick
"Mud, mud, glorious Mud" - two members (and one dog) of Powick Parish Ramblers braved the steep muddy slopes on their walk last Thursday around the Suckley Hills. Starting at the Knapp and Papermill Nature Reserve, the path led up Old Storridge Hill onto the Longley Green, Crews Hills and up onto Suckley Ridge. The switch-back route was part of the Worcestershire Way. The wet conditions did not deter the walkers for they were rewarded with a profusion of wild flowers. The new, fresh green leaves of the trees contrasted with the blue and sometimes black sky, but the walkers were spared the rain. The five mile walk ended at teh top of the Knapp Reserves and a short descent led to the Leigh Brook (much altered in course by last July's floods). Welcome refreshments were enjoyed at the Nelson Inn at Suckley when Joy and Phil were thanked for leading the walk.
Last Wednesday Powick Ramblers held their tenth AGM at Powick Parish Hall when reports were given by the chairman and secretaries. The Ramblers no longer have the responsibility of maintaining footpaths and stiles - this is now the landowners' responsibility. Over the year the group has walked a total of 160 miles over a total number of 35 different walks. Apart from walks within the parish, the walkers ventured into Leigh and Bransford, Alfrick, Suckley and further afield to Colwall, Bromyard, Ombersley, Shrawley and Grimley. A new constitution was drawn up at the AGM and officers elected: Chair Peter Harris, Vice-Chair Chris Evans, Secretaries Jo Walker and Rita de Boer, Treasurer David Allen, Publicity Joy Bunyan. New leaders are needed to lead walks. The next one being on Tuesday, May 6 at 10am. Meet at the New Inn, Storridge (on A4103) for a four mile walk (no stiles!) led by Garth Lower (01886 833362).
